Amateurs and Their Discontents, 1870-2000
"Amateurs and Their Discontents" is based on the epilogue to a longer project entitled Paper Knowledge: Toward a Media History of Documents. It offers a selective history of amateur self-publishing in order to render a long history of zines at the same time that it challenges both analysts and enthusiasts of DIY publishing to think beyond the opposition of the subculture and the mainstream.
